Music education prepares you for life! Participation in a Band or Choral Program helps build self-confidence, creativity, concentration, hand-eye coordination, teamwork and a sense of belonging. Music instruction assists with memory and problem–solving skills, goal setting and time management skills. It also fosters the desire to achieve excellence and provides cross-cultural appreciation.
Music Program Philosophy
At Hunting Hills, we strive to offer a well-rounded and meaningful music-making experience for all students registered in Band and Musical Theatre classes.
We emphasize: excellence, teamwork, performance, community outreach, cooperation and shared learning experiences with other school and community music and fine arts programs, and also within our school ie: dance, drama, art, and modern languages. Our music students are challenged to strive for excellence in their personal musical growth on a daily basis. We do not encourage competition between our students and those from other school music programs. We feel that it is counter-productive educationally to promote competition in the musical environment.
Here at HHHS, we support the spirit, dedication, talent, cooperation, and risk-taking that is needed to develop and maintain musical growth for individual and group success. Our Bands and Choirs will only participate in Music Festivals that are non-competitive in nature and designed to be a true celebration of musical growth through a positive, equal, and shared learning experience for all participants!
We offer our Music students challenging and fun option classes that can provide anywhere from 15-30 plus credits that count towards High School Diploma requirements. Highlights include: large and small group instruction, specialized clinics and workshops with guest musicians and conductors, annual Banff retreats and bi-annual performance tours to Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver. Performance opportunities include: cooperative projects with other schools, shared annual celebrations with other HHHS Fine and Performing Arts students though Dinner and Dessert Concerts, Musical Theatre, CD recordings, College Arts Centre concerts, open houses and school tours.
