(403) 342-6655 ext. 1437
LOCATION: Hunting Hills High School, Red Deer, Alberta
ELIGIBILITY: Grades 9 and 10; Fulltime registered students at HHHS; male and female qualified applicants accepted.
LEVEL OF HOCKEY: All levels of hockey are accepted, from AAA to Recreational; the most important attribute is the ability to show a strong commitment to improve.
GOALTENDERS: Upt to 4 goaltenders in each of the two groups will be accepted into the program. The program for the goaltenders is exactly the same as for the players, but in addition, the goaltenders will receive specific goaltending instruction by Matt Tillapaugh and possible guest instructors such as Andy Nowicki (former Los Angeles Kings goalie coach).
TEACHING STAFF: Mr. Matt Tillapaugh will be conducting on-ice, off-ice, skills sessions and classroom sessions. Matt may also bring in guest instructors in the field of sports psychology, speed & agility training, skating and, periodically, other high level hockey coaches/players to add to the variety and overall development of the players.
For each of the Grade 9 and Grade 10 Programs, students will have their class schedules arranged so they will attend school together for two courses. Grade 9 Hockey program particiipants will take Hockey 9, Phys. Ed. 9, and Health 9. Grade 10 Hockey program participants will take Hockey 10 and Phys. Ed. 10 together. Hockey instruction and training will be embedded within each of these courses. Schedules may vary depending on ice time, core subject scheduling, etc.
Ice times for this school year will be at the Collicutt Leisure Centre on scheduled mornings (to be announced) from 8-9:15 a.m. for the Grade 10 Program, or in the afternoon for the Grade 9 Program (unless otherwise scheduled). Students are responsible for getting their full equipment to the Collicutt in the morning and home on the days they practice with their respective teams after school. Hunting Hills will provide a safe, locked storage space for the students in the Hockey Program to house their equipment during the school day.
Although there currently exists a number of hockey academies in Alberta, most, if not all, other schools have the players participating on teams in organized leagues during the school year so that the focus and energy of the players tends to be on game play, travel to tournaments, etc. The Hockey Program at Hunting Hills High School is designed to enhance individuals' fundamental hockey skills, help develop their love of the game, and give them a chance to focus on their core subjects while taking electives that they find relative, interesting and enjoyable.
Obviously, players, and parents wanting their children to participate in this program have to look at this experience NOT as a reallocation of the resources and time they spend in minor hockey, but as a concentrated development program that will result in significant improvements, not only in their hockey skills, but in their life skills and life values as well. We will work very hard to ensure that the students in the program are not ‘burning out’ in terms of hockey, both mentally and physically.
All players can attend the weight room (The Lightning Loft) on a regular basis for resistance training with appropriate weights and supervision will be part of their weekly program. Academic success and teaching students life values and life skills will be the first priority.
